Comic Book Art
« on: July 25, 2006, 07:32:32 AM »

I was thinking about art over the weekend after Mark Peyton mentioned that he was not that thrilled to pick between two Justice League 0 covers and how Michael Turner was the least of two evils and it occurred to me to bring up a discussion on art on what people liked, owned, and would like to own. What is it that people like.

I'm a bit of an art whore, yet I'm very picky. The artists I like have to have a very distinct appearance with a capability to tell a story without getting lost. my favorites need to tell a tale and bring a mood or skill to a page.

The guys I like include: Howard Chaykin, Jim Lee, Lee Bermejo, Mike Mignola, Guy Davis, Masamune Shirow, Enki Bilal, Darick Robertson, Steve Dillon, Travis Charest, Bill sienkiewicz, The Kubert Family Walt Simonson, Bryan Hitch, Ben Templesmith, Dave McKean, Bryan Lee O'Malley Andy Clarke, Jock, Dave Gibbons, David Lloyd, Tony Harris, Eddie Campbell, Jamie Hernandez, Art Adams, Jeff Scott Campbell, Michael Lark, Michael Gaydos, J.H. Williams, Will Eisner, Frank Miller, and David Mack.

i own a couple of things and i would like to get more. I own the following pieces:
A Page from Bendis's Jinx by Bendis
A Gotham Central page and head sketch from Michael Lark.
A House Secrets page by Teddy Kristensen
A Starman page by Tony Harris.
A Constantine head sketch from Lee Bermejo
A Spider Jerusalem sketch from Darick Robertson
A GiantKiller color headshot from Dan Brereton
A Quick Hellboy sketch from Mike Mignola.
A Doop sketch from Darwyn Cooke.

There are also pieces that I would like as well. This is just a possible shopping list for WW Chicago next week.

A Chaykin Flagg piece.
A Jim Lee sketch or page. (I'm considering bidding on the Superman/Batman piece)
A Joe Kubert Sgt Rock piece.
Any Walt Simonson piece.

So... Anybody crazy about art like I am or am i just alone in the wind?

I keep meaning to buy a page off Hitch's Ultimates that's affordable, but folks keep scarfing up the title page shots.  That one of the eyeball from issue 9 just blew me away.

Aside from that, it's all too expensive for my budget.  I've got some sketches from conventions, and that'll last me over.  Next NY Con I hope Richard Isanove shows up again so maybe I can sneak a black and white out of him.  I've always wondered what his penciled art style is like--he's a master painter already.

I don't think there is very much original Dave McKean art left.  Much of what he does is worked through photoshop these days (though I got a little doodle out of him at a signing of Satan). Same for Templesmith, but Templesmith pencils his stuff first, though his pencils tend to be lackluster compared to the final product.

I really enjoy Templesmith's pencil's because it gives a very plain, simple definition to his work that show the importance of color to his art. His line work is funny in a comedic manner.

I like Hitch's art, and i know i would like a piece, but I know finding a average price piece is difficult. As for Sketches, I would not hit up a guy like Hitch, becuase the line would be very cranky if one does so. With that in mind I'd kill for a Hitch Engineer myself.

Francis, which pages did you get?

You probably saw from my gallery that I'm a big fan of Dustin's work. You'll have to post up the sketches you got.
